Talk About a GREAT Border!

We bought this fabulous mid-19th century Red & Green applique quilt from the family of the maker, one Grace Moffatt of Ohio.

The family believes Grace made the quilt in anticipation of her wedding; she married Johannes Gottlieb Karber on April 26, 1870.

What a great quilt maker Grace (Little Miss?) Moffatt was! Her advanced needlework skills are very evident, and her design abilities match.

She placed her nine "Currants and Coxcombs" applique designs quite close together, leaving little (but just enough) white ground. She surrounded the lively center section with a superb, complex, (and very unusual) border treatment.

The asymmetry of the individual border units lend a bit of extra visual energy to this piece, and a unique element that distinguishes the quilt. And the corner elements are totally charming, too.

Grace Moffatt hand quilted her treasure in a dense grid of "hanging diamonds," executed at an impressive 9 - 10 stitches per inch (counting one side only).

Separately applied red cotton binding.
