What Can You Do With Scraps of Fabric?

You could, if you "had it in you," make a super quilt like this one, created from a variety of odd shapes of cotton.

You could, if you "had it in you," make a super quilt like this one, created from a variety of odd shapes of cotton.

Susie Tompkins Buell, a co-founder of Esprit, made this wonderful quilt part of her collection, and displayed it on a wall for all to enjoy. All did!

Here is what our friend, Joe Cunningham had to say about this abstract achievement:

This quilt is built in three rectangular sections, each one ladder-like, and each "rung" of the ladder is composed of perpendicular ladders. Each rung of those is denoted by strips composed of scraps of various sizes and shapes.

The scraps are themselves arranged in a sort of rough dark/light repetition, with the more stark black and white bits on the outside ladders and gentler, less contrasting fabrics grouped more or less in the middle section. The browns seem to leak from the middle to the outer sections.

Over the entire composition the large arcs of the big-stitch quilting swirl like a gentle wind blowing sailboats across a lake.

The rhythmic interplay of the shards within the rungs of these "ladders" gives a sense of great freedom ~ tightly constrained.
