Mid-19th century Baltimore Album Quilts sometimes include an image of a monument.
monument. Occasionally, these monuments have a name on them, and often that name is Samuel Ringgold, a military hero of the Mexican American War (1846-1848).
In this Album Quilt, we have a block with a simple monument, without a name, and surrounded by butterflies, palm trees, and what appears to be a gate.

We are not certain of the origin of this quilt, but several features suggest that it might have been made in Baltimore during the celebrated heyday of Baltimore Album Quilts, 1840 - 60.
The flower-filled urns and cornucopia are each "latticed," and fit with a characteristic design element of BAQ's. Certainly, the palm trees suggest a Southern origin.
Sixteen blocks, all different ("album"), are appliqued, reverse appliqued and embroidered. The needlework is expertly executed.
Two of the blocks have charming, folky birds one standing perched on a branch on her tippy-tippy toes!
Many small details distinguish this beautiful example... the embroidery is extraordinary!
The center is surrounded by a beautiful swag border.
The hand quilting is expertly executed. Each block has different quilting patterns ~ The quilt maker created a "sampler" or album of quilting designs, too. It looks like this very skilled woman had a great time with this!
All cottons and in very good condition.
