DIAMONDS

Unknown Quilt Maker
Collected in Walnut, Iowa
62 x 80 inches
Circa 1889
Cottons

A handsome quilt with some terrific, unusual borders, and a virtual dictionary of late 19th century printed cottons ~ wonderful deep colors, and engaging designs.

The owner told me that she had theorized that the quilt, acquired without provenance, was pieced from samples, probably from one particular manufacturer:
“ I had always thought was likely constructed from salesman's samples based on the fact that many of the fabrics appear in several different colorways and the unusual borders which seemed to say to me that she was determined to use every last bit of that sample book. I acquired a copy of Victorian Quilts, 1875-1900 They Aren't All Crazy, a booklet developed in conjunction with a Pilgrim/Roy exhibit at the MAQS August 27, 1994- January 15, 1995.”
Page 37 of that booklet (scan attached) features a selection of fabric swatches from the Autumn, 1889, fabric line of Wm. Simpson & Son Fabrics, Eddystone Mfg. Company.”

Although apparently little-used, this Diamonds quilt has some weak fabrics ~ no doubt from the chemicals used in the dyes or mordants. We found some 25 or so individual Diamonds (or half- or quarter-diamonds) that have trouble. A few are completely gone, some are just beginning to weaken. See photos below.

Otherwise in excellent condition.

Terrific cotton floral fabric for the back. Hand quilted.
