"MAY FLOWERS"

Unknown Quilt Maker
Collected in Maryland
98 x 98 inches
Circa 1860
Cottons

ELEGANT and FINE

An early and very fine appliqued Summer Quilt, found in Maryland,
and measuring an ample 90 x 90 inches.

The quilt maker used very high quality, imported cottons for her masterful work,
and may have created it with future generations in mind.

She would have had to have been a woman of leisure to have had the time, needlework education, and money to purchase expensive fabrics such as these. This one is not a heavy, utilitarian work made for hard use.

Her hand applique work is superb, made with tiny almost invisible stitches.

The overall design of this beautifully conceived early textile
is a lovely balance of sturdy red poinsettia blossoms
and all kinds of charming, delicate and beautiful vines, buds, and berries.

Very Good Condition with some isolated slight fading.

The piece has its original separately applied printed green cotton binding.

An American heirloom treasure more than 150 years old.

Price: $2,250
