~ Interesting, Unusual Technique ~
The woman who made this mid-19th century Coxcomb applique quilt
used a technique we do not see often.
She used lots more of the Turkey Red and green fabrics than she needed
for her stems and her large Coxcomb "blossoms."
Then, instead of "stuffing" those areas (from the top) to fill up the excess,
she left the fabric to gather on itself
creating a lovely and unusual "naturalistic" effect.
This "Red and Green" features nine applique blocks,
each one depicting a Coxcomb (in bloom and partial bloom), with stem and leaves.
The quilt maker framed this center section with simple "vining" borders on all four sides.
She was also an excellent quilter:
she covered the surface of her quilt very densely, with beautiful hand stitching.
Her quilting designs ~
feathers, double lines, and feathered wreaths ~
are accompanied by a design we rarely see:
an "S" scroll, like the shape of the holes on violins.
All are executed in an impressive 9 hand stitches per inch (counting one side only).
Measuring a generous 85 x 85 inches, this quilt would work on a modern bed.
It also looks wonderful hanging.
In Excellent Condition,
with no holes, tears, stains, or fabric weakness.
The quilt has been washed in its life, though probably not many times.
The green has retained it original color;
the Turkey Red has the slight mellowing we usually see in red of this era.
Nicely made with a separately applied cotton binding and softly rounded corners.
Flat and lightweight, strong and sturdy.
