This Quilt Has Great Provenance...
... and had made quite a journey!
We see it first in the collection/inventory of the legendary Ohio quilt dealer, Sandra Mitchell.
When Sandra died, significant pieces in her collection were bought by Shelly Zegart, another great collector and dealer in Louisville.
A few years back, Shelly sold this quilt to Tom Reddick in Texas,
to add to his very impressive quilt collection.
Tom is now selling a few of his treasures,
and we feel fortunate that he asked us to sell quilts for him.
(The "Peppers" quilt and the great Ohio Amish trundle quilt,
both now for sale, are also his.)
both now for sale, are also his.)
A photo of this unusual, folky Sampler quilt is published
as part of an article on Sandra Mitchell in the
1986 volume of the wonderful Quilt Digest series.
A copy of the book will be included in the sale of the quilt.

This quilt maker had her own ideas about what a Sampler quilt could be
Her blocks, variations on appliqued wreaths and diagonal straight lines,
looks like a giant TIC-TAC-TOE game to us.
Who wins??? WE do!
Her designs are unusual, as is her very minimalist use of color. Using only solid mahogany and teal throughout, she throws in ONE cheddar circle as a surprise!
The folky appliqued birds are also great;
each has a pieced top knot and a hand embroidered eye and legs!
The quilt is in Excellent CRISP Condition with the following issues:
there are some light areas of discoloration throughout. (See 3d photo down below.)
One split in a small piece of solid brown.
This innovative quilt maker finished her quilt with a tightly scalloped edge,
separately bound with a solid brown cotton. She was no slouch!
Check out her decidedly industrious hand quilting ~
all swirly and "echo-like"...tiny, even stitches.
