Unknown Quilt Maker
Collected in North Carolina
70 x 70 inches
Circa 1890
Wools
Here’s a truly spectacular interpretation of a turn of the 20th century Log Cabin Quilt.
The graphic impact speaks for itself, and the size makes it easy to hang on a wall. It measures a tidy 70 x 70 inches.
The quilt maker used strips and strips and strips of beautiful colored wool fabrics to create a piece both dramatic and subtle. She organized thousands and thousands of narrow strips to make a bold graphic statement built around a radiating diamond center.
Her "light" strips are quite colorful and contrast powerfully with the darker sections, creating the strong overall design. The dark sections are varying shades -- and create a delicious richness and depth.
We love how she added the inner colorful "Piano Key" border --- followed by the outer border, also Piano Key, but in those subtle darker shades -- and finished with the separately applied binding.
Brilliant.
Hand quilted, which is unusual in wool Log Cabins. Separately bound.
In Excellent Condition.
Our friend says about this quilt:
"This quilt is what might be called "overpieced," with the logs in the log cabin blocks being about 1/4" wide. Not satisfied with the vibrating tone on tone blacks, not satisfied with the oscillating color fields, the quilter had to create yards more of slanty stuff with which to fashion a border. Check out how the quilting on the outside border both complements and opposes the slant-strip border, while also echoing the black of the blocks. The overall effect is like being stuck inside a giant kaleidoscope."
