Ruby McKim was among the most talented, very best known, and most prolific of the quilt designers of the 1920s and 1930s.
Her "Colonial History Quilt" is a redwork (hand embroidered pattern that was popular and traced by many. many American women to work into their quilts.
The patterns were originally published starting in December of 1926, and appearing block by block, into the year 1927. Every week a different pattern was published in the Saturday issue of many major newspapers, along with a description of each design's historical significance. There were 24 patterns published.
The hand quilting is exceptional, too. It is executed in blue thread ~ looks like a single strand of cotton embroidery thread. The quilting designs are very unusual, detailed, and beautiful. They fit the Art Deco period wonderfully.

This example is a very rare interpretation. While the embroidered blocks do not depart from the original published designs, the "set" or format of the quilt very unusual, if not unique. The vertical and striped setting is one we have not seen before.
The quilt is initialed and dated ~ "RHR" apparently finished the quilt in a very timely way ~ it is dated "1927". The signature and date are very strong, the bold embroidery, in contrast to the single thread style of the individual blocks.
The hand quilting is exceptional, too. It is executed in blue thread ~ looks like a single strand of cotton embroidery thread. The quilting designs are very unusual, detailed, and beautiful. They fit the Art Deco period wonderfully.
