Cotton Sateen

A lovely, beautifully made example of "May Tulips," a pattern designed by
the legendary Marie Webster.

We do not know the maker of this all cotton sateen quilt,
but we can easily see how experienced and exceptionally skilled she was.

Check out her fine, confident hand applique, and extraordinary hand quilting,
(9sts per inch) which densely covers the entire surface of this beauty.

She softened the dense geometry of her all-over crosshatch quilting
by adding softly curving feathers in a hand quilted border.

The curves of those feathers is echoed by the delicately
scalloped edge, which she separately bound in a green cotton.

but with a some fading here and there.
The minor fading is visible in the photos, but much less obvious in real life.

Strong and sturdy and delicately elegant.
Cotton sateens.

An inexpensive mid-twentieth century treasure.
