An Original "Take"

We are a bit stumped by this wonderful textile.

We have concluded that here,
an inventive quilt maker made some unconventional choices,
leaving her own mark on a popular early 20th century style.

Starting in the early years of the 20th century State Flowers (and Birds) quilts
were quite the rage.  Many companies published kits or patterns,
and almost all are cottons quilts, with light backgrounds

This quilt maker marched to her own drummer.
S/he worked in wool felts, and used deep, rich, saturated colors.

Only two of the blocks have State names, and an additional one
has the word "AMES" prominently embroidered.

In Excellent Condition with some very small scattered moth holes (see photos).

The applique was executed by machine, as is some of the embroidery,
though each seam is covered with hand embroidered.

This is a top, with no back, filling or binding.
Perhaps s/he was not finished, and planned to embroidered all the states' names.

We have never seen anything quite like this colorful, charming piece.
