GARFIELD’S MONUMENT

Unknown Quilt Maker

Collected in Michigan
38 x 62 inches
Circa 1890
Wools

We begin to see versions of this design, known as “Garfield’s Monument,” after President William Garfield was assassinated in 1881.

Here’s a RARE, small, graphic, hand embroidered interpretation.

This late Victorian all wool piece may have been used as a casket cover,
perhaps for a fraternal organization such as the International Order of Odd Fellows or the Masons.

Mary Strickler’s Quilt Collection
