Ruby McKim was among the most talented, most prolific, and very best known,
of the quilt designers of the 1920s and 1930s.

Her "Colonial History Quilt" is a series of "redwork" hand embroidered designs,
here worked in blue embroidery thread.

Each block represents McKim's ideas about

The patterns were originally published starting in December of 1926, and appearing block by block, into the year 1927. Every week a different pattern was published in the Saturday issue of many major newspapers, along with a description of each design's historical significance. There were 24 patterns published.

The quilt's format is a very unusual one.
While the embroidered blocks do not depart from the original published designs,
the "set" or format of the quilt very rare, if not unique:
We have never seen the vertical and striped setting before.

The quilt is initialed and dated
"RHR" apparently finished the quilt in a very timely way:
The quilt is dated "1927" ~ the year after the patterns were published.
The signature and date are exceptionally strong,
the bold embroidery in contrast to the single thread style of the individual blocks.

Quilt is in Mint Condition ~ it appears unused.
CRISP!   Strong and sturdy, flat and lightweight.

The hand quilting is exceptional, too.
It is executed in blue thread ~ looks like a single strand of cotton embroidery thread.

The quilting designs are also very unusual, detailed, and beautiful.
They fit the Art Deco period wonderfully.
