crazy quilt ~ "central" medallion

CRAZY QUILT
Two-Sided

Unknown Quilt Maker
Collected in Iowa
62 x 82 inches
Circa 1940
Cotton bark cloth and cottons (front)
Cottons (back)

Central (?) Medallion

You wonder sometimes what goes on in people's minds.

Why did this quilt maker organize this quilt with the darker "center" section offset?

One "practical" explanation might be this:
Quilts were often made for specific beds in specific rooms,
where the bed is in a set place.
Say the bed is against a wall, and "all" the borders would not show.
Why do more work than you must??

Whatever her reason, this quilt maker organized pieces of "bark cloth" to
great graphic advantage.

In apparently unused, crisp condition, this tied quilt is sturdy and usable on a bed.

It also will look great on the right wall, or folded.
Nice on BOTH SIDES!
