What a Document!

This Log Cabin quilt tells quite a story!

On the lower left corner block, which has remained un-pieced,
Nellie Davis, a very proud mother and grandmother,
gives us quite a picture of who she was ~ and what was important to her!

She inscribed the following on her quilt,
in red embroidered block letters:

  1880 LOG CABIN QUILT
BY NELLIE DAVIS
MOTHER OF A BOOKKEEPER
IN STREATER ILL
HER GRANDSON
ONCE WAS
     GOVERNOR OF MICHIGAN

The quilt is otherwise a traditional Log Cabin
with hues arranged to form an overall "Dark and Light" variation.

Made primarily of wools (with a few silks), the quilt has many, many
very narrow,  pleated "log"/strips ~ a very graphic treatment.

Nellie Davis tied her well designed quilt with a red yarn knot
at each "intersection,  echoing the (mostly!) red squares
at the center of the Log Cabin blocks.

She finished the quilt with a knife edge,
secured with yet more red ~ a wool embroidered blanket stitch.

Not only  a unique and charming document, this graphic textile is
a very good size for hanging on a wall: 56 x 74 inches.
