BUTTERFLIES and FLOWERS

Unknown Quilt Maker
Collected in Illinois
68 x 84 inches
Circa 1940
Cottons

We see lots of Butterfly quilts made in the 1930s and 1940s. This source for this particular treatment was likely a pattern published in a daily newspaper such as the Kansas City Star, which published printed ideas for quilts for many, many years.

This cheery piece is all cottons with a great array of printed fabrics available during the Depression-era. Those terribly difficult financial times saw many American women drawn to very lighthearted quilt patterns.

This beauty is entirely hand made -- hand appliqued, hand embroidered, and hand quilted. The quilt maker set the pretty blocks within grids that intersect with Ninepatches.

Then she went the extra mile and added a border usually known as "Prairie Points" ~ no easy task!
